Lemonade: Working and Loving it! Part 2

Lemons to Lemonade

So, let’s take a close look at how we are going to go through this demanding process, and come out better. Shall we?

1. Blow your Mind Away!

In all that I write, I can’t just stop emphasising the importance of the mind –the powerhouse of the body. Yes, even in most books which I have come across, the mind is treated as though it is the master of all ceremonies. Absolutely, where would you be without your support system? Nowhere! The way you position your mind determines each step you take, from the point you take it, and to the level it is going from your starting point. That is why in the case of a demanding job, one needs to go back to consulting the mind. Now, you believe that you have seen and had it all at your present place of work, and you would want to retire early with absolutely nothing to fall back on in your bank account. Not only that, there is 0.9% possibility of landing a new job at the moment you make an exit. At that point, you are down to ground zero, and invariably so, some will take to heavy drinking or find some form of succour while going down deep below without having any idea.

Hey! The world is not about to end, and neither is the sky caving in on you already. Simply retrace your steps, grab a pen and a paper, and go to work. Ask yourself, where am I, why am I here, and where am I actually headed. Probably you chose to work at your present place of employment, simply because it was what was readily available at that moment. Obviously, you are headed somewhere, and at that moment, you should be able to realise that that’s an enabling platform for future growth. Gradually, you are beginning to change your mindset from feeling depraved to counting numbers. What numbers are you counting? Interesting, while writing down your questions, your eyes are being opened, and you see the need for a quantum leap, the need to carve out a target with a timeline for yourself, and the possibility of being happy once again.

Think deep about whatever you want to do

2. Get Involved!

It wouldn’t break an arm if you simply refuse to exist in a space, but decide to get involved in what happens around you. Obviously, you have worked on your mind, your mood, and probably your system of communication, and you are now a step higher to compare to where you used to be. At the moment, you are able to realise that there is so much going around you more that the 9-5 that you are used to. I understand that your job description reads out some bunch of sentences, guided by some pronounced clauses and phrases, but there are no rules to what you can learn or the extent of exposure an employee needs to get in a workplace? The last time I checked, absolutely nothing forbids you from getting to know things out of your duties or assignment.

I believe that one industry that caught this vision is the banking system. They understand the importance of exposing their members of staff to different aspects of the industry: they are well informed of the dangers of workers who decide not to turn up at any given time, the importance of learning, and also the need for self development. In the real sense, they are empowering their employees, and equipping them for future employment.  So, I challenge you to leave your comfort zone, and quite being that office assistant, secretary, customer care rep, engineer, IT guy, lawyer, etc. Get up and find what other forms of knowledge you could gain that you never had before. If possible, draw up a schedule of how you intend to go about this. This is simply because you can’t predict where you would likely find yourself tomorrow, and what work challenges you could face at any given time.

3. Get Versatile!

I can’t over emphasize the importance of reading, picking up courses, and attending conferences or workshops. You have worked on your mindset, excellent. You have become open minded at work, good. Now, it is time to work on something called self development. I am aware that in some offices, extra programmes attract promotions. Let’s be honest, don’t you need the extra cash? Don’t you want the extra career boost? Don’t you need the motivation?

Reading would certainly broaden your horizon, going back to school would definitely sharpen your intellectual ability and awaken your inner strength, and conferences would definitely challenge you into pursuing opportunities in diverse forms. Don’t forget that as you meet new people, you are using the avenue to put out words for a new place of employment. Get wisdom, and wise up!
