Four Main Strategies to Being that World Best Boss or Employee

The Sherry on Top!

Have you ever been in a situation whereby a boss or an employee is exiting an organization, and the company isn’t eager to let them go? In reality, these are the world's best bosses and employees? These kinds don’t just get the job done but impact lives. The way we manage our position in a workplace is one vital topic that most people neglect. On the one hand, for some, it is all about attaining the highest level, but for others, on the other hand, it’s simply building relationships while they climb that career path: which one of these are you?

Before I start off, for me, there is actually nothing like ‘best’ because no one is absolutely perfect and change is constant. Rather, I’d say that most people have some preferences due to certain distinctive features that separate one person from the other. The fact still remains that once a boss was formerly someone’s subordinate. Yep! A manager was once unemployed,  an intern, a clerk, or a new recruit before they climbed up their career ladder. Once a boss, one must not forget that there is a need to work with their subordinates, for them, and on them. So also it is for that employee whose aim is to become a boss someday.

Observation

The first thing every boss should do while working with employees is to observe. This would go a long way in helping their relationship to flourish and also assist them to learn what actually drives their subordinates to deliver: many have different temperaments, means of motivation, and characteristics. It is the job of a manager to decide how best to work with this set of people and bring out the best in them for what the work at hand requires. Most times, this is not usually easy but it is worth the effort. An employee also has to study the kind of manager or colleagues he or she reports to or engage with because when both work hand in hand, they achieve more with a clearer understanding of what bends or straightens the other without jeopardizing their workflow. There would always be that employee who wants to know what makes things better for the next person, and this could only be derived through close monitoring or observation.

Communication

This is key in every organization. Unfortunately, most managers have failed without apology to this aspect because lack of observation has led so many bosses driving away their best hands through their wrong mode of communication or attitude (body language). It is most likely that some bosses go to the extent of using some unethical approaches like verbal utterance or threats on their subordinates with reckless abandon. This is due to some who are not too observant but more interested in getting results with the mind-set that this is simply the best method to motivate a member of staff. In retrospect, subjecting employees to psychological fear is one way of not getting the job done, but triggering the mind into thinking of alternatives. Certain attitudes could be condescending, hurtful, and discouraging; these must be avoided by all means. Although many would disagree with this, it is equally the work of the manager to make people stay in an organization and not necessarily the HR because he is the person an employee reports to directly. Bosses must always have self-control and the right attitude to work because so many eyes are on them at once. Communication is two way in the sense that a subordinate should also learn to speak out or express themselves to a manager when a particular issue is affecting their work or productivity negatively, probably due to work pressure or out of ignorance, such could be overlooked by a boss. This should be conveyed within acceptable work procedure and both parties should take their observations seriously because all is geared towards getting the work done while creating a formidable and goal-oriented team.

Mentorship

Another important fact about being the best boss is the ability to come down to the level of the subordinate to teach and develop. This requires a whole lot of patience and time because not all subordinates are willing to learn and some have different levels of assimilation. The boss must have in mind that such a platform is merely an enabling environment for both parties to grow in understanding. So, the goal of the boss is to develop those under him. Also, we must never overlook the fact that as the boss tries to impact knowledge, there is so much to learn from that young mind that reports to them because both come from different generations and view life from diverse perspectives.

Sympathy

Although the pressure to deliver could be high, but bosses or employers of labour should never forget human nature which encourages care and support. A boss must also care about the welfare of people placed under him: allow some form of leave when necessary and always look out for the good of his workers against any adversary in the same organization. Nothing would go wrong with a check-up upon people who work with you through offering some form of consolation when and where necessary and always encourage them at their work. Besides, certain employees would never get the cat out of the box, but it is that observant box that would fish out or sniff out why his subordinate is not as productive as always. Don’t forget that this must be done within an acceptable working process. In as much that bosses look so tough on the outside, but let’s not forget that they are humans too. Remember that your boss faces more heat than you do, and shades you from the fire, and it is on you to lighten this burden by carrying out your duties as and when due.

Being the best entails a lot of hard work from a boss or an employee perspective; one is required to pay close attention to others, correct in an appropriate way, and as well be compassionate when and where necessary.
