Typically, we exist in a society that normalizes the definition of a person according to physical appearance or abilities. Today, we meet Uche, a young lady, who has decided to live above this norm.

Hello, Uche! How are you?

I am pretty good.

Are you nervous about the interview?

Not at all. I feel it is about time I let it all out of my system.

Thank you for having us. Let’s jump right into it. So, tell me, how was it growing up?

It was quite interesting; lots of experiences and life lessons.

As a young girl, what was one of your major challenges?

Lol! Well, one of the issues I had while becoming was my height.

How did it make you feel back then?

I felt really sore.

What exactly brought about this ill-feeling?

It was simply because I saw other people the same age as me but not the same size or height.

So, this feeling of yours, did you speak out in the form of talking to someone about it?

I expressed my discomfort with my mum.

What were her words of consolation?

Well, she made me realize that people would never understand why certain things are the way they are until when faced with a similar or exact situation. She also made it clear that I was special in my own way.

Did you take any further step apart from what she told you?

Absolutely, I braced myself up for anything that would come my way after her encouragement.

At what point did you get over it?

I would not say that I have been able to get over it completely, but I am better now than before, in the sense that I have grown in understanding when compared to who I used to be or how I used to feel some few years ago when confronted with this same thought or feeling. Also, after high school, I prayed, asking God for a peaceful life. I strongly believed that if I could be at peace with myself, it would surely be very simple to overcome any form of verbal bullying.

I told myself this: look, every day, you meet different types of people. So, verbal bullying is not yet over, and you just have to grow stronger each day. I feel that it was the turning point to everything good that came then. It changed my mindset and I started to see the positive side to being simply me. That was indeed the bedrock of acceptance, self-identity, and self-actualization.

Could you share some of these experiences?

Lol! Sometimes, when I am walking on the way, all of a sudden, I would hear: “Men! This girl is too short….” then it would hurt, but now I will just say, thank you! At times, it would be a group of them or even at the bank or market. You hear side talks or rude words or sentences being thrown at you like pebbles.

I want to get one important detail from you. Did these negative reactions ever deter you from achieving your set goals or become whoever you intend to be in life or where you are at present?

Absolutely not, rather, it encouraged/es me to work hard the more. It served as an enabling platform for my growth, and today, I am certainly where I planned to be, and I am pushing ahead towards becoming that which I envisioned for myself shortly.

Excellent! So, before we allow you to go, kindly leave a word of encouragement for many out there who might be struggling with one thing or the other with regards to our subject of discussion.

Hey! Anyone listening or viewing this video, I want you to understand one important fact: verbal bullying will never stop. You have to be strong. Also, you need to understand that nobody is perfect or complete. If you’re a bully, please stop already; you don’t know the amount of pain that is being inflicted on another.

Thank you so much, Uche, for opening up this part of you to us. I got two things here: verbal bullying won’t stop already, so, you have to stay strong out there. Also, if you are the bully, simply stop right now because you are putting a lot of innocent folks out there in harm’s way.

Thank you!
